Job Description

Chemonics seeks a mental health and psychosocial support services (MHPSS) consultant to train and supervise MHPSS staff on mental health service delivery for the Manahel Program in Syria’s Idleb and Aleppo governorates. The consultant will supervise staff according to project methods and work with case management staff to train MHPSS officers as trainers using the WHO mhGAP Humanitarian Intervention Guide. The consultant will be based in Gaziantep, Turkey, and report to the protection manager. Responsibilities include:

  • Develop and contextualize MHPSS training materials in line with WHO mhGAP guidelines
  • Supervise and support MHPSS officers, and train them to identify and manage priority mental health conditions according to mhGAP guidelines
  • Work with Manahel protection team to better understand international mental health and psychosocial support guidelines including mhGAP, IASC, and Sphere standards through training events and discussions
  • Develop referral guides and standard operating procedures for MHPSS services
  • Ensure completion of knowledge tests and supervision checklists and analyze results
  • Participate in coordination mechanisms and advocate for IASC MHPSS principles
  • Assist with hiring
  • Coordinate with the protection manager to develop and review training materials, documentation, and reports
  • Contribute to the rapid needs assessment
  • Develop a system to monitor the quality of service delivery and oversee coordination with NGOs in designated locations
  • Write and distribute reports after each training session
  • Write clinical reports and case studies when required
  • Recommend improvements to the case management teams
  • Develop training package including resource and capacity building plans
  • Provide a monthly summary of support and supervision sessions disaggregated by location and recommend follow-up actions
  • Submit detailed timesheets that include number of sessions and patients


  • Psychiatrist with 3 years of experience working on mental health and psychosocial support programs, preferably in humanitarian settings
  • Training and supervisory experience required
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in different cultural environments
  • Ability to work in basic living conditions in a difficult environment
  • Ability to work on teams or individually
  • Ability to cope with stressful workloads and limited resources
  • Trained in Psychological First Aid, the mhGAP manual, and community-based mental health training
  • Training experience with multicultural groups
  • Experience in mental health and protection for displaced people, refugees, and returnees
  • Ability to travel to Syria
  • Skill in Microsoft Office, especially Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • NGO experience in a crisis setting
  • Demonstrated leadership, versatility, and integrity
  • Proficiency in English; fluency in Arabic
