Job Description

The New Roots Program is an initiative focusing on “food-secure resettlement” in IRC locations throughout the United States. This initiative supports nutrition, food security, gardening, enterprise, and production activities within the US network of IRC offices so that resettled refugees are empowered to be self-sufficient and lead healthy lives. The program helps refugees and political asylees participate in community gardens and navigate local food sources with the aim of greater access to healthy foods and increased community integration. The Urban Farm and Training Specialist will work closely with the New Roots Coordinator to manage the urban farms and other projects related to it. They will be reporting directly to the New Roots Coordinator.

Major Responsibilities:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Training and technical assistance (40%)

  • Provide technical assistance to New Roots refugee growers in sustainable agriculture and organic vegetable production
  • Collaborate with New Roots staff to develop market planning, post-harvest handling, farm safety, and quality control workshops
  • Deliver trainings and workshops to New Roots refugee growers

Urban farm management (30%)

  • Help coordinate farm processes such as mulch drop off, tool checkout and maintenance, seasonal compost ordering, and seed orders
  • Train and oversee volunteers for farm work days
  • Assist in developing new urban farm space as capacity of the organization grows

Produce Logistics and Farm Stand Liaison (30%)

  • Coordinate logistics with New Roots staff for production, harvest, and post-harvest processes for the Vickery Meadow Farm Stand
  • Work with key partners and community stakeholders to increase New Roots goals in expanding market outlets and growing space
  • Assist in collecting data for grant deliverables and future funding

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree preferred
  • 2-4 years sustainable agriculture experience
  • Experience working with diverse cultures and beginning English speakers
  • Experience and familiarity with produce production to scale for community supported agriculture/farmers’ market
  • Dynamic team member with strong leadership skills, creativity, ownership of projects, and shows initiative
  • Ability to work independently as well as on a close, collaborative team
  • Strong written, verbal, computer and interpersonal communication skills in English
  • Must be able to endure temperatures during all growing seasons in North Texas as job will primarily take place outdoors
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs unassisted
  • Valid driver’s license, access to reliable vehicle with current insurance, and ability to travel to different New Roots growing sites
  • Must be available to work on weekends
