Terms of Reference:

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is the world's largest humanitarian agency, fighting hunger worldwide.

The Emergency Operations Division (EME) is responsible for enhancing the World Food Programme’s (WFP) preparedness and response capacity in emergencies, including early warning, preparedness planning, crisis support and information management.

The main role of the data science and machine learning specialist is to design, prototype, implement and test descriptive and predictive analytics models, work with technicians to determine operational models and to collaborate with WFP divisions to identify and explore opportunities for the application of predictive analysis.


· Modelling and analyzing data in the EME division and WFP data warehouse to develop models that contribute to the organization’s capacity to make decisions based on qualitative and quantitative data.

· Coordinating the efforts of WFP to leverage various types of data, and facilitate its innovative use such as real-time monitoring, output-based management, and 360-degree communication across all operations.

· Analyze large data sets and identify anomalies and relationships.

· Develop data-driven decision and predictive models by working with structured and unstructured data sets

· Providing technical guidance in exploring, testing and applying new approaches for driving intelligent data demand and use, including but not limited to geo-spatial analysis, artificial intelligence, machine learning, etc.

· Assisting in identifying suggested use-cases that can benefit from data science.

· Standardizing the process for collecting, monitoring, analysing and reporting data.

· Define and communicate the value that can be derived from analytical models.



Master’s degree and/or PHD in Economics, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, or other relevant fields.


At least 3 year of experience in management of data projects that combine innovative and practical dimensions.

Experience in the humanitarian and development work is an asset.

Knowledge and skills:

· Familiarity with emerging methods and research in area of computational social science, big data analytics, and artificial intelligence is an asset.

· Ability to present findings and translate data into dashboard (Tableau, Power BI, Foundry)


· Fluency (level C) in English language.

· Intermediate knowledge (level B) of a second official UN language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish)

WFP offers a competitive compensation package which will be determined by the contract type and selected candidate’s qualifications and experience.
